Gozo yoga holidays Fr £645
Sunra is delighted to offer holidays to this stunning new location. A jewel in the Mediterranean with its wonderful weather, stunning scenery & beaches, steeped in history and as yet quite unspoilt, we invite you to come, relax and enjoy this beautiful island of Gozo!
The island is a masterpiece created by nature, with its pristine shoreline, untouched country trails, baroque architecture and 7000 years of culture. The government have a project in place to make it an Eco island with a view to complete the project by 2020 & it is fast becoming a tourist attraction in its own right.
Gozo is easily accessed by a 20 minute ferry ride which runs 24/7 from the port in Malta, 1 - 1.5hrs from MLA Airport. Airlines fly daily from all over Europe offering inexpensive flights all year round. For UK flights please look at www.airmalta.com www.ryanair.com & www.easyjet.com For flights from Europe & worldwide please look at www.skyscanner.net
This is a great opportunity to deepen your practise and/or for beginners to jump in at the deep end. There are two Sivananda yoga classes per day, each lasting one & a half hours, generally at 8.00am & 5.00pm, with one free day per week. Sivananda is a soft, gentle style of Hatha yoga. Each class incorporates pranayama, assanas, stretching & Meditation & are tailored to the individual needs of each student.
In each week there will be one free day giving you plenty of time to travel round the island sightseeing as well as between morning & evening classes. Public transport is very cheap and easy to use. Alternatively you can just chill by the pool & relax, book a full body or hot stone massage, Reiki or Reflexology at the De-Stress treatment room directly across the road. Shirley Shone, who offers the treatments, is a wonderful, highly trained & qualified therapist. Dr Ira Kudinova, a medical doctor & pathologist, will be offering Korean Acupuncture at the farmhouse or apartment.
Sunra are running the Gozo yoga holidays in the picturesque, quiet, residential village of Gharb, which like all of Gozo is steeped in history. It is very much known as the healing centre of Gozo, dating back to its most famous healer Frenċ tal-Għarb, who lived there between 1892 and 1967. Although he never studied medicine, he was considered by many as a great healer of body and soul. People today still go to Għarb and visit the house where Frenċ lived, which has been converted into a historical and folklore Museum.
There is an incredible Roman Catholic church & national shrine Ta’ Pinu, with 76 stained glass window & 6 mosaics, famous for its healing miracles. Sitting there one feels the intensity & magnificence of this healing sanctuary. There are hundreds of testimonials inside of people who have been cured by the patron saint of the church, Madonna Ta’ Pinu. The basilica is located on the edge of a cliff in open countryside, allowing visitors beautiful views of the area.
There are two local restaurants 15 minutes walk away in the village that we highly recommend. Salvina, open for lunch & dinner, has a garden, conservatory & indoor area, creating a beautiful ambience with impeccable service. It offers an extensive range of local fish, meat, vegetarian dishes & daily specials, all very delicious & freshly cooked. Lunch is from €10 & dinner from €20, excluding alcohol.
Rangers Bar is a family run small restaurant with a lovely roof terrace offering pizza, pasta & local fare including fish & meat dishes. There are plenty of options for vegetarians. It’s only open for dinner & an average meal costs €12 without alcohol.
There is a well-stocked supermarket in the village, open from Monday – Saturday, 7am – 12.30pm & from 4.30pm – 7pm. There is a larger supermarket a further 10 minutes walk away, open Monday – Saturday 7am – 7pm & Sunday 7am – 1pm. Both supermarkets offer gluten free produce including almond & soya milk.
The pharmacy is across the road from the larger of the two supermarkets & there is also a GP clinic.
The nearest place to swim in the sea is the inlet at Dwejra beside the Azure Window, where you will also have a yoga class & sunset Meditation, weather permitting. This is a 40 minute, very scenic walk from the Farmhouse. They are some of the most beautiful and spectacular spots on the Island & most of our guests choose to walk there & then take the bus back as it is quite steep.
The inlet is a natural lagoon of seawater linked to the Mediterranean Sea through a narrow opening formed by a natural arch and a 50-metre cave. The beach is very picturesque with traditional colourful fishing boats bobbing up and down, and with beautiful nature surrounding the lagoon. It has shallow, calm and safe waters with a pebbly shore and seabed. The Maltese Luzzu boats pass through the tunnel of the inlet and you can take a ride through the tunnel to explore the nearby caves - Fungus Rock and Azure Window for €4.
There are two sandy beaches on the island. Ramla Bay, which is the largest of the two, offers sun beds, umbrellas & a cafeteria & San Blas, which is small with a very steep walk from the road, but worth the trek! There is a jeep service available for €3 each way if you prefer to take it easy. There are also sun beds, umbrellas & a cafeteria here. The bus stop is a 10 minute walk from the farmhouse & from there you can take a 15 minute bus ride from Victoria & then another bus on to both beaches. Please note from Gharb to Victoria the buses run once per hour. There is a flat rate of €2 for any bus journey, however the ticket lasts for two hours, so you can use it on any bus route. You can also hire cars, bicycles & scooters locally, please ensure you bring your licence!
Victoria, the capital of Gozo, is buzzy & lively, full of shops, restaurants & cafes where you can sit outside & watch the world go by. You can also visit Gran Castello, a citadel in an area of Victoria which has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The Cittadella is a combination of a medieval castle and an early modern gunpowder fortress, with its northern walls retaining a largely medieval form and its southern walls dating back to a 17th-century reconstruction.
Ġgantija in Xaghra is a megolithic temple, the oldest known ruins in the world, even older than the Pyramids! Coach parties stop here but if you wait for them to pass through it is much easier to get a sense of the scale of the temples and the effort it must have taken to construct then so long ago. There is some information given out and tickets for here also get you into the Ta Kola windmill and can be used once for each attraction over a couple of weeks so you don't need to visit them both on the same day.
Every village in Gozo has a quaint square in its centre with a church. These squares are generally surrounded by bars and restaurants. The churches are stunning and always worth a visit.
